Phyllida Barlow (1944-2023) was a British artist primarily known for her large, often expansive, sculptures. During her career, Barlow used immediate materials in a non-conventional way. These included wood, cardboard, fabric, plastic and plaster, with which she created monumental and often experimental works.
Her artworks are characterised by a mixture of abstraction, crudeness and an almost fragile/precarious aesthetic and often examine the limits of sculpture through mass, volume and height along with the physical processes of making.
Barlow's art is internationally recognised and she has had numerous exhibitions at prestigious institutions including Tate Modern and Tate Britain, Haus der Kunst in Munich, Kunsthalle Zürich, Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Toronto. In 2017, she represented the UK at the Venice Biennale. In 2022, Barlow was awarded the Niedersächsische Sparkassenstiftung’s Kurt Schwitters Prize.

Her work STREET. untitled: broken shelf (2010) will be shown in the exhibition Paper, Rock, Scissors - Materials and Tools of Art (2025).
