Jimmie Durham (1940–2021) was a visual artist, poet, performer, and political activist in the American Indian Movement. In his sculptures, assemblages, drawings, texts, and installations, he tackled the relationship between different cultures and societies to nature as well as the destruction caused by a lack of understanding, while always aiming to critically reflect on his own position.

Durham’s The Vitrine of Childish Pleasures (2021) was on display in the exhibition Species of Spaces and Other Pieces, and a permanent loan of the work is currently in planning. The artist’s precise formal language playfully inspires thoughts about the meaning of art and its exhibition in society – questions and thoughts that are and must be discussed time and again in the KinderKunstLabor.
